Please tell us more about your interest in Brown: Why does Brown appeal to you as a college option? Who or what has influenced your decision to apply?

My interests can not be categorized. Brown is an institution that fully supports students who don’t feel comfortable in the proverbial box of “majors,” and allows great flexibility with its open curriculum. I want to become part of the Brown community because I thrive in academic environments where intellectual curiosity is not hampered by strict “subject” based learning. I want the freedom to both dabble and concentrate in my studies in a way that is relevant to the way I live, now. Like the community at Brown, I believe that education and life are synonomys.
Brown won me over with its commitment to student directed learning and the Brown/RISD dual degree program. With interests in both science and art, I often find it difficult to draw a strict line between the two disciplines. Scientific concepts are often best communicated in visual terms and art is often inspired by scientific study and ideas. This new dual degree program had the biggest effect on my decision to apply.

Why are you drawn to the academic fields you indicated in the Anticipated Degree and Academic Interest questions above?

Art, science, and design are present in every moment of human life. Building an intimate relationship between these disciplines allows for new modes of communication. Concepts in biological sciences are often best explained visually and are a major source of inspirtion to my work as an artist. The Brown/RISD Dual degree program matches my interests and abilities perfectly.
