"Who we are is revealed, ultimately, by the questions we ask, rather than the answers we find. What we want to know is a reflection of how we see the world and a verification that we are looking at it." ~Deena Metzger

"...we are only alive to the degree that we let ourselves be moved." ~Lewis Hyde

Adiós Barrio Viejo

Mi Viejo West Side

Adiós Barrio Viejo ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Good-bye Old Neighborhood
aunque ya no existes~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~although you do not exist anymore
dentro de mi pecho no quieres morir ~~~~~~~~in my heart, you will not die
como dice un dicho~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~as the saying goes,
que lo creo muy cierto~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~one that I believe to be true
saber recordar es volver a vivir.~~~~~~~~~~~~knowing how to remember is to start living again.

~Nicolás Castillo, 1974

Poem and Translation gratefully borrowed from Rothke's Latino Minnesota, a book made possible, in part, by the Elmer L. and Elanor J. Foundation.....
